TAKE 6

Headliners will be the
award-winning Christian sextet TAKE 6. They began in the '80s and broke new ground in a cappella. Their jazz harmonies, original songs and vocal pyrotechnics represent some of the best a cappella ever recorded. The members are Alvin Chea, bass, Cedric Dent, baritone, Joey Kibble, second tenor, Mark Kibble, first tenor, Claude V. McKnight III, first tenor, David Thomas, second tenor.

The group was signed to Warner Brothers, Nashville in 1987, and quickly earned an inspirational reputation when their debut album, released in 1988, won them two Grammy Awards and resulted in top ten appearances on both the Billboard Contemporary Jazz and Contemporary Christian Charts. Take 6's swinging, harmony-rich gospel sound attracted a flurry of attention, and the group went on to record or appear with a number of luminaries, including Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder. They have 12 landmark recordings to date with their new one, Feels Good recently released.

In 1991 charter member Mervyn Warren left the group to pursue a successful career as a producer, and Joey Kibble, Mark's younger brother, was invited to round out the vocal lineup. The group added instrumentation to their purely a cappella sound beginning with the record "So Much To Say"; "He Is Christmas," "Join The Band" and "Brothers" continued their streak of success, and Take 6 amassed a total of seven Grammys and eight Dove awards, as well as topping the Downbeat Magazine's Reader's and Critic's poll for seven years consecutively!

Take 6's 1998 release, "So Cool," brought the group back to its a cappella origins. The group toured worldwide, and appeared on numerous TV shows as well as high-profile commercials ("Gatorade" with Michael Jordan).

From their modest beginnings as an a cappella gospel group to their current status as multiple Grammy Award winners, Take 6 has redefined the standards for vocal music. Indeed, the vocal group craze that's currently sweeping the R&B world was touched off in part by the revelatory emergence of Take 6 in 1988. Hot contemporary R&B acts like "Boyz II Men" and "Coming of Age" cite Take 6 as a major influence.

The group themselves, never content to rest on their substantial laurels, continues to grow and evolve. Their talent, hard work and Christian faith has earned them their place as one of the most enduring and best-loved groups in all a cappella. Those attending the HF show in Denver will certainly be awestruck, entertained and impressed by the sound these talented men produce.

In short, to steal from one of their songs, their “A Cappella is So Cool”. To learn more visit www.take6.com .

Vocal Spectrum

Now one of the popular quartets in the Society, 2006 International Quartet Champion Vocal Spectrum has been singing together for only three years. The members of the quartet come from various musical backgrounds, from classical vocal training to jammin' in rock-n-roll bands.

These four young men, who are majoring in different fields of study, attend Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. V.S. was originally formed as a one-time educational quartet to sing for a local high school and has never stopped singing since! V.S. has traveled to Germany, Holland, Sweden, Russia, England and throughout the United States singing for various shows and conventions as well as teaching high school students about barbershop harmony.

All members of the quartet sing with the Ambassadors of Harmony (2004 International Chorus Champions). In July of 2004, Vocal Spectrum won the 2004 International Collegiate Quartet Contest held in Louisville, KY.

On July 8th, 2006 they won the coveted International Barbershop Quartet Contest – becoming the first quartet to win all 3 possible medals (Collegiate Quartet, Men’s Quartet, and Chorus Medal).

This show begins their busy week as they perform during the Denver convention and present their swan song as reigning champs. Here is your first and maybe BEST time to experience the phenomenon that is Vocal Spectrum.

The Westminster Chorus

Few choruses have generated such excitement and anticipation as The Westminster Chorus of California.

Most of the members of Westminster acquired their taste for barbershop harmony through Society and District-sponsored Young Men in Harmony programs, including youth harmony camps and workshops.

It was in March 2002, a group of five young barbershoppers met to discuss forming a new chorus, a chorus composed of other young singers, as a means of involving more of their peers in singing barbershop harmony. The “new” chorus qualified for district with only a few rehearsals and 15 guys on stage . . . the average age was only 20. They stunned everyone by outscoring all others at district but were denied the trophy due to a rare eligibility disqualification. They won the FWD title the next year and placed 9th at International in Louisville. They had 25 men on stage that year. Westminster won the FWD title again, this time with 45 men on stage and new director Royce Ferguson.

This past summer they nearly won it all and came close to defeating the Goliath Vocal Majority coming up only 17 points short. Their appearance on this show on July 3, 2007 may be history in the making as they drive toward completing their quest for the coveted chorus gold medals later in the week.

OC Times

Back by popular demand is OC Times, the current 3rd place bronze medalist. One of the most entertaining quartets . . . also referred to as “sexy”, OC Times have enjoyed an incredible career and attracted a devoted following.

Shawn York, Sean Devine, Patrick Claypool, Cory Hunt are a young, energetic barbershop quartet breathing new life into some of our favorite Standards and barbershop classics. Inspired by artists like Michael Bublé, Sinatra, and Elvis; OC Times brings something new to the table: Traditional barbershop harmony; influenced by early American Rock and Roll and stylized by pop-culture. With a repertoire varying from Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Paul Anka and even the great songwriter, Stephen Foster; this quartet’s fresh style and sound naturally appeals to the youth, while paying tribute to the past.
