The famous Buffalo Bills

It's the picture of middle America: River City, Iowa, circa 1912. A barbershop quartet sings for the appreciative townsfolk, preceding the Last Days of Pompeii fireworks, then a performance by the brass band.

What could be more American than that?

That's one reason THE MUSIC MAN is the theme of the 62nd annual convention of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc., in Kansas City July 2-9.

The Buffalo Bills, 1950 champion, as they appearedint he film version of The Music ManThe theme celebrates the 50th anniversary of the championship of The Buffalo Bills, the quartet that originated the role on Broadway and in the film version.

The Buffalo Bills are perhaps the best known barbershop quartet in history. They are revered among Barbershoppers for not only the recognition their Broadway performance brought to the style, but also for their unique sound that defined barbershop harmony for many years.

Music Man events will highlight the week:

An Ice Cream Sociable on Tuesday night (open to the public) features a recreation of the famous "Rock Island Railroad" scene from the show. Youthful quartets and an appearance by "Professor Harold Hill" will highlight the night.
Expect some "Trouble! Trouble! Trouble!" Thursday on Barney Allis Plaza, when the Massed Sing brings thousands of singers together in a free outdoor concert.
Music Man 2000 banners posted throughout downtown by the Convention & Visitors Bureau evoke the nostalgia of the show.
